Focus on solutions

It’s easy to get frustrated when things aren’t going your way and to focus solely on your anger. Instead, shift your focus to finding solutions to your problems. Your anger isn’t going to fix what is making you angry, so brush off your problem-solving skills and see what you can do about it. At the very least, it will help empower you to make choices to improve your mood.

Don’t point fingers

Anger can be an invigorating emotion, partially because it allows you to shift the blame to someone else. If you feel wronged, anger can make you feel like you are solely a victim to your circumstances. Instead of placing the blame on someone else, own your emotions. For example, insteading of saying, “you never help me with housework,” you can say, “I’m upset that you didn’t help with the dishes.” Be specific, respectful, and use “I” statements when expressing your anger.


There is a famous quote that has been attributed to many different sources that says,“holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Holding grudges allows anger to consume you with bitterness. Forgiving someone who has angered you allows you to let go of that emotion and move on with your life. No one is always going to behave the way you want, so it is best to let these things go and free yourself from anger.

Lighten the mood with humor

Often times, you can diffuse the tension of the situation that is making you angry with humor. Humor can help shift your perspective and see how you may have unrealistic expectations of the situation. However, if you use sarcasm, this may backfire and make the other person angrier or hurt their feelings, so be cautious when turning to humor.
