You may be thinking to yourself, “I never get the flu! I have a great immune system and I take care of myself.” Unfortunately, because influenza is different each year, the flu that you avoided last year isn’t the same flu that will be going around this year. Who’s to say that you will have an immune system that can fight this year’s influenza when your body has never had to fight it before? It’s irresponsible to your friends and loved ones to chance the possibility of getting influenza and spreading it to them. They depend on you for much more, so why let them down over something so small as a flu shot?
Okay, so how do flu vaccines work?
When you go to get your flu shot, it’s a quick process that’s done in no time at all. The Flu shot helps your body develop antibodies against the Flu within 2 weeks after the shot. These antibodies provide protection and help your body fight against the infection should it occur.
But wait, didn’t you say that influenza is different every year? How do you know what to put in the flu vaccine?
The seasonal flu vaccine that’s provided here at the Men’s Vitality Center protects against the influenza viruses that researchers indicate will be the most common during the upcoming flu season. What most of us refer to as “flu season” can start as early as October and last as late as May.
I’m still not sure if I should get a flu shot.
We highly recommend that you not take the chance of getting influenza and spreading it to your loved ones. Your health is your responsibility and there are people who look up to you. Don’t let them down by getting sick AND getting them sick, too! Since 2010, the Center For Disease Control recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receives an annual flu vaccine.
So, when is the best time to get the flu vaccine?
It’s important to get your flu shot soon after the vaccine becomes available. This is normally in October. Although flu season doesn’t peak until around January, it’s highly encouraged to get the flu vaccine as early as possible because it takes at least two weeks for the antibodies to develop after the shot. Be prepared, it’s much better to be protected before the influenza virus begins to spread within your community.
Here at the Men’s Vitality Center, we want you to consider the fact that by getting your flu vaccine, you’re not only protecting yourself, but you’re helping to protect your family and community. Don’t be the one that spreads the flu. Walk in for your flu shot today.
