High Blood Pressure

CONDITIONS

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a common chronic disorder that is at risk of complications if left uncontrolled. Blood pressure is the force that is put on your blood vessels by the blood pumping into the vascular system by the heart. This force should be at a tolerable level, higher force can lead to damage to the heart muscle weakening it significantly. Uncontrolled hypertension can increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Causes & Symptoms

High blood pressure is often caused by genetics or lifestyle choices such as diet, lack of exercise and smoking. Sometimes it is caused by unrelated conditions such as sleep apnea, thyroid or kidney disorders, or adrenal gland tumors. It is important to identify the cause of hypertension in order to develop an effective treatment plan.

The goal of treatment is to avoid long-term complications by maintaining healthy blood pressure. Prescription medications, a healthy diet and lifestyle modifications are often used to achieve optimal protection and regulate blood pressure.
