Mostly characterized by high blood sugar levels in the body, this serious condition affects your body’s ability to either produce insulin or use insulin effectively. At the Men’s Vitality Center in Tempe, we’ve successfully helped hundreds of men regain control of their diabetes through a variety of innovative and safe treatment options. While there are a variety of in-home remedies to help keep your blood sugar levels under control, there are some that work better than others. In this article, we’ll discuss the top four home remedies for diabetes so you can lead a healthy life.
Diabetes Home Remedy #1: Holy Basil Leaves
Did you know that the leaves of holy basil are jam-packed with healthy antioxidants and essential oils? Holy basil, or tulsi leaves, produce three important compounds to assist with with storing and use of insulin: eugenol, methyl eugenol, and caryophyllene. Collectively, all three of these compounds help the pancreatic beta cells, or the cells that store and release insulin in the body, to function properly. Another added benefit of consuming holy basil leaves is that they can help beat the ill effects of oxidative stress.
Tip: Consume two to three tulsi leaves whole or one tablespoon full of tulsi leaf juice on an empty stomach. This will help lower your blood sugar levels.
Diabetes Home Remedy #2: Flaxseed
Due to its high fiber content, flaxseed can aid in your digestion as well as the proper absorption of fats and sugars. According to a recent study, consuming flaxseed can help to reduce a diabetic’s postprandial sugar levels by almost 28 percent.
Tip: Consume one tablespoon of ground flaxseed powder every morning on an empty stomach with a glass of warm water.
Diabetes Home Remedy #3: Green Tea
Drinking green tea is a great way to help your body use insulin effectively. Unlike various other tea leaves, green tea is unfermented and high in polyphenol content. Polyphenol is a very strong antioxidant and hypoglycaemic compound that can be used to help control the release of blood sugars in the body.
Tip: Steep a bag of green tea in hot water for two to three minutes. Remove the tea bag and drink the green tea in the morning before your meals.
Diabetes Home Remedy #4: Leaves of Bilberry
The leaves of billberry have been used in Ayurveda for centuries to effectively control diabetes. A recent study from the Journal of Nutrition states that the nutritious leaves of the Bilberry plant contain high amounts of anthocyanin. Anthocyanin can be used to enhance the action of various proteins involved in the glucose transportation and the metabolism of fat. Due to their unique properties, Bilberry leaves are an excellent way to lower one’s blood sugar levels.
Tip: Crush the Bilberry leaves in a mortar and pestle and consume approximately 100 milligrams on an empty stomach.
